Women bobbed their hair during the 1920s to as a way to gain a higher sense of freedom although for many women their most valuable possession was their long hair. Bobbing their hair gave women a liveliness they never felt before and allowed them to express themselves as the new modern woman. They felt more in control of their conversations, becoming more boisterous instead of quiet and gentle
Women became more shapeless since the need to look thin to be fashionable was diminishing during the 1920s. They got rid of their constraining corsets and long uncomfortable Victorian dresses which gave them room to walk and dance more freely. Those long Victorian dresses turned into shorter dresses and skirts as a way to express their freedom and show off their style. Their silhouettes became more masculine.
Flappers' makeup comprised of blush, mascara, dark eyes, and red lips. This style of makeup showed off their sexuality that was traditionally not recommended due to the necessity of chastity.
Opportunities and Rights
The 19th amendment passed in 1920 gave women the right to vote, and the Equal Rights Bill gives women the same rights as men. This provided women the chance to take more control in their life by voting for preferable laws, getting jobs, and other means of taking part in the economy. In fact, they were able to form organizations against a huge law, Prohibition, causing it to be repealed by the 21st Amendment later on.
Additionally, Women worked at jobs that men traditionally held, such as being a director of a drug-corporation or running a successful lawyer's office. Europeans who came to the United States during that time were surprised by the rise of women's wages and opportunities in the work field. Although men still had higher paying jobs and opportunities, they could no longer control the decisions of women, and women slowly assimilated into the traditionally male culture.
Family Life
Flappers believed children were a huge economic and social burden. Therefore, they used birth control. Women argued that this would give them more social freedom, better mental/physical health, and encouraged bonding between mother and child, enhancing the quality of small families. In a time when large families weren't necessary and men didn't request them, women had the choice to choose how many children they wanted. Some women argued that women who gave birth to too many children died earlier than they should have.
Without the burden of too many children, they had more time to enjoy pleasures such as going to parties.
Behavior
Women were more able to express themselves sexually. They openly talked about sex and had casual relationships. They were also active in the city night life going to Jazz bars, clubs, and other places where they could flaunt their sex appeal.
Women now drank and smoked in public, things that only men have done before. After Prohibition, young women drank even more as an act of defiance and fashion.
During this time period, women found their confidence and have become more assertive and witty. They were also determined never to sink back down to the level they were at before. They demanded the same freedoms that men have and encouraged other women to do the same.
Conclusion
Women were refusing their role as the inferior gender, denying that they had to take care of the house and look/act ladylike. They asserted their rights to dance, drink, smoke, date, work, and anything else that men were able do. They were creating the modern woman: the woman who controlled her own destiny and couldn't be restrained wouldn't be held down my anyone including men because anyone regardless of their gender can achieve greatness and should be able to pursue their happiness and live life the way they desire to.
